Chef Subarna Sijapati is an honors graduate of the top-ranked culinary arts program of the Art Institute of Colorado, where he was awarded the gold medal for his final cooking portfolio. He has almost 30 years of professional culinary experience.
Subarna’s love of cooking came from having grown up in Kathmandu, where eating local fresh foods and delighting in meals with friends and family is a way of life. Hours are spent preparing dishes with layers of flavor and ingredients. This inborn appreciation for food fueled his passion to learn about new cuisines, flavors, and techniques and to make creative menus that satisfy and inspire. To this end, he has met with cooks and farmers around the world including Morocco, France, Spain, South Korea, India, Oman, Mexico, Hawaii, and Portugal.
Now he shares his talents through custom catering and private culinary instructions in the Adams County area (through Subarna’s LLC).
His professional career began in a variety of high-end, noted restaurants in San Francisco, Boulder, and Denver. He also worked for several years as a private chef for a prominent Denver family where every night he provided five-course meals from around the globe. Subarna was also the Executive Chef at the University of California at Santa Barbara where he prepared and served meals to many VIP guests for the Chancellor, including Hollywood icon Robert Redford and former President Bill Clinton.
In 2008, Subarna and his family relocated to Adams County, PA, where he became the Food and Beverage Manager for the new Gettysburg Battlefield Museum Visitor Center. Soon after, he was recruited by Eat’n Park Hospitality Group as an Executive Chef and also worked as Assistant Food and Beverage Director at Ski Liberty.
Most recently, Subarna’s desire to support local foods and farmers led him to become the Manager and Program Director for the Adams County Farmers Market. He loves to teach cooking and show how food can be both delicious and nutritious. Through the Adams County Arts Council, he offers classes on global cuisines, conducts pop-up lunches and theme dinners (such as Spanish wine and tapas night), and runs cooking programs for children and teens.
